  • Scientific Name: Microcanthus strigatus (often grouped in the sea chub family)
  • Size: Grows up to 6 inches
  • Appearance: Deep, compressed body with striking yellow and black parallel stripes and an active swimming style.
  • Natural Habitat: Found in rocky reefs, coastal waters and tide pools around Australia, as well as parts of East Asia and Hawaii

    Aquarium Care and Diet

    Temperament: Generally peaceful, though they are very active swimmers and benefit from a spacious tank (75 gallons or larger).

  • Diet: Omnivorous and hardy; they readily accept standard aquarium foods like flakes, pellets and frozen mysis or brine shrimp.
  • Aiptasia Control: Many reef hobbyists use them as a utilitarian choice to clear out nuisance Aiptasia(glass anemones).
  • Reef Caution: While safe at smaller sizes, adults can occasionally nip at fleshy large polyp stony (LPS) corals if they are not well-fed.
