Heniochus Butterfly - Chieftan
Description
The Chieftain Butterflyfish has a laterally compressed, diamond-shaped body with a long, white dorsal filament extending from the first dorsal spine, giving it a graceful, flag-like appearance. Its body is predominantly white, adorned with three wide black vertical bands: one running through the eye, a second mid-body, and a third near the base of the tail. The posterior dorsal and caudal fins are bright yellow, adding vibrant contrast.
Adults can grow up to 20ā23 cm (8ā9 inches) in length, and they often swim elegantly in midwater, displaying their long dorsal filament and striking patterning.

Temperature: 24ā28 °C (75ā82 °F)
pH: 8.1ā8.4

Aquascape and Environment:
Provide a spacious, well-established aquarium with open swimming areas and moderate rockwork for shelter. Chieftain Butterflyfish are active midwater swimmers and appreciate current flow that mimics their natural reef slope habitats. A mature tank with abundant live rock encourages natural grazing and exploration behaviour.
Diet and Feeding
In the wild, Heniochus pleurotaenia feeds on small invertebrates, algae, and planktonic organisms. In captivity, it adapts well to prepared foods and benefits from a varied diet to maintain health and vibrant coloration.
Recommended Foods:
Frozen mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and finely chopped seafood
High-quality marine omnivore flakes and pellets
Algae sheets or spirulina-based foods to supplement vegetable matter
Occasional live foods to stimulate natural foraging behaviour
Feed 2ā3 times daily in moderate portions. Chieftain Butterflyfish are generally bold feeders, often taking food from the water column without much hesitation.
Temperament and Compatibility
The Chieftain Butterflyfish is peaceful and social, making it suitable for community aquariums with other non-aggressive species. It can be kept singly or in small groups (3ā5 individuals) if the tank is large enough to provide ample swimming space.
Suitable Tankmates:
Peaceful reef fish such as tangs, wrasses, anthias, and gobies
Other Heniochus species in large tanks (600+ litres)
Reef-safe invertebrates like shrimp and snails
Avoid:
Aggressive species or large predatory fish that may stress or harass it
Reef Compatibility
ā Reef Safe
The Chieftain Butterflyfish is generally reef safe, posing no threat to corals, clams, or most invertebrates. It may nibble occasionally at soft algae or microfauna on live rock, which is normal natural behaviour and usually harmless to reef systems.
