Griffis Angel
Aquarium Requirements
Minimum Tank Size: 475 litres (125 US gallons) or larger
Temperature: 24ā27 °C (75ā81 °F)
pH: 8.1ā8.4
Specific Gravity (Salinity): 1.020ā1.025

Ammonia & Nitrite: 0 ppm
Nitrate:< 20 ppm (preferably < 10 ppm)
Aquascape:
Provide a spacious, mature aquarium with extensive live rock arranged to form caves, ledges, and shaded areas for refuge. This species naturally inhabits deeper reefs, so subdued or indirect lighting is appreciated.
Ensure ample open swimming space in addition to rockwork. Strong, well-oxygenated water flow and pristine water conditions are essential for long-term health. A powerful protein skimmer and efficient biological filtration are strongly recommended.
Diet and Feeding
The Griffis Angelfish is an omnivorous sponge and tunicate grazer, feeding on sponges, tunicates, and detritus in the wild. In captivity, it adapts well to prepared foods if offered a nutritionally varied and sponge-enriched diet.
Recommended Foods:
Frozen angelfish formulas containing marine sponge material
Finely chopped fresh seafood (clam, shrimp, scallop, squid)
Enriched mysis and brine shrimp
Spirulina- and algae-based flakes or pellets
Dried seaweed (nori) clipped to rockwork or feeding clips
Feed 2ā3 small meals daily. Supplementing with sponge-based preparations ensures optimal nutrition and vibrant coloration. Allowing natural algal and sponge growth on live rock encourages grazing behavior.
Temperament and Compatibility
The Griffis Angelfish is generally peaceful to semi-aggressive, displaying mild territoriality once established but coexisting well with other non-aggressive species. It is less aggressive than many large angelfish, making it an excellent choice for community or FOWLR systems.
Suitable Tankmates:
Peaceful to moderately assertive species such as tangs, butterflyfish, wrasses, anthias, and larger reef-safe community fish
Other Apolemichthys or large angelfish only in very large systems (over 700 L / 185 gallons) with distinct territories
Avoid:
Very aggressive species (large triggers, groupers, or overly dominant angels)
Very small or timid fish that may be intimidated by its size
If adding multiple angels, introduce the Griffis Angelfish last to minimize territorial conflict.
Reef Compatibility
ā ļø Reef Safe with Caution
Like most Apolemichthys angels, the Griffis Angelfish may occasionally nip at:
LPS corals (especially fleshy species such as Acanthophyllia or Trachyphyllia)
Zoanthids and soft corals
Clam mantles
However, individuals vary, and many aquarists report success in mixed or SPS-dominant reef systems when the fish is well-fed and introduced to an established aquarium. A mature, stable environment with consistent feeding greatly reduces coral interest.
