Chinese Blueline Angel
Aquarium Requirements
Minimum Tank Size: 400 litres (100 US gallons) or larger
Temperature: 23ā27 °C (74ā81 °F)
pH: 8.1ā8.4
Specific Gravity (Salinity): 1.020ā1.025
Alkalinity: 8ā12 dKH
Ammonia & Nitrite: 0 ppm
Nitrate:< 20 ppm (preferably < 10 ppm)
Aquascape: Provide a spacious aquarium with extensive live rock for grazing and hiding, interspersed with open swimming zones. The species prefers shaded areas and caves that mimic natural reef crevices. Stable water quality and low-stress conditions are essential for long-term health.
Moderate to strong water movement and high oxygenation are recommended, along with an efficient protein skimmer and mature biological filtration system.
Diet and Feeding
The Chinese Blueline Angelfish is an omnivorous sponge grazer, feeding on sponges, tunicates, algae, and detritus in its natural habitat. In captivity, it adapts well to prepared foods if offered a varied, nutrient-rich diet.
Recommended Foods:
Frozen or prepared angelfish formulas containing sponge material
Finely chopped marine seafood (clam, shrimp, squid, scallop)
Enriched mysis shrimp and brine shrimp
Spirulina- and algae-based pellets or flakes
Dried seaweed (nori) offered regularly on a clip
Feed two to three times daily in moderate portions. Providing natural algae and sponge growth on live rock encourages grazing behavior and helps maintain digestive health and coloration.
Temperament and Compatibility
The Chinese Blueline Angelfish is generally semi-aggressive, especially once acclimated and established. It may show territorial behavior toward other angelfish or similarly shaped species but is typically peaceful toward unrelated tankmates.
Suitable Tankmates:
Peaceful to moderately assertive species such as tangs, wrasses, anthias, and butterflyfish
Larger community fish of differing shapes and feeding niches
Avoid:
Other Chaetodontoplus species or similar mid-sized angels unless the aquarium exceeds 700 L (185 gallons)
Aggressive species such as large triggers or groupers
Very small or timid fish
Introduce the Blueline Angel last to minimize territorial aggression, and ensure plenty of rockwork to define territories and reduce confrontation.
Reef Compatibility
ā ļø Reef Safe with Caution
While less destructive than some large angelfish, C. septentrionalis may nip at:
Large-polyp stony (LPS) corals
Soft corals and zoanthids
Clam mantles and some sessile invertebrates
Success in reef environments depends on individual behavior, tank size, and consistent feeding. It is best suited to fish-only with live rock (FOWLR) systems or mixed reefs with hardy SPS corals and close monitoring.
Additional Information
Maximum Size: Up to 18 cm (7 inches)
Lifespan: 10ā12 years with excellent care
Difficulty Level: Intermediate to Advanced
Natural Behavior: Solitary or found in pairs; deliberate swimmer; spends time grazing on rocks and exploring caves
Origin: Northwestern Pacific ā Japan, Taiwan, East China Sea, northern Philippines
Sexual Dimorphism: Minimal; males may show slightly more intense coloration.
Summary
The Chinese Blueline Angelfish (Chaetodontoplus septentrionalis) is a beautifully patterned mid-sized angelfish known for its electric blue striping and dignified presence. With its moderate temperament, manageable size, and adaptability, it represents an ideal choice for experienced aquarists seeking a standout specimen for a large marine or FOWLR aquarium.
When provided pristine water quality, ample rockwork, and a sponge-enriched diet, the Blueline Angelfish will thrive, displaying rich coloration and engaging, intelligent behavior characteristic of the Chaetodontoplus genus.
